Using Aquagenic Wrinkling to Predict CF Carrier State

This research aims to determine if a water-based hand soaking test, called the aquagenic wrinkling procedure, can help identify carriers of cystic fibrosis. The study focuses on how the skin on the palms wrinkles after being submerged in water, which may indicate carrier status. It is an observational study conducted by the University of Iowa involving adults aged 18 to 24 years. Participants will undergo a single visit where they will immerse their hands in water for up to 20 minutes while researchers observe and photograph the wrinkling process. The procedure involves repeated cycles of submerging and drying the hands to monitor changes. Participants will be grouped based on whether their wrinkling results suggest they may be cystic fibrosis carriers or controls. During the visit, participants will have their hands photographed before, during, and after the water immersion to capture wrinkling changes. Researchers will use both human observation and machine-learning tools to assess wrinkling over the 20-minute period. The study aims to measure how well the wrinkling response predicts cystic fibrosis carrier status. Participation involves only this one-time observation, with no ongoing treatments or follow-up required.
