Strengthening the Communication Skills of Oncology Nurses Through Virtual Reality-Based Assertiveness Training

This research aims to improve the communication skills of oncology nurses by using virtual reality-based assertiveness training. The study focuses on nurses who provide care to cancer patients and their families, emphasizing the need for strong communication during the cancer process. It uses a randomized controlled experimental design to evaluate the impact of this novel training approach. The assertiveness training is based on a program developed by Michel and Fursland (2008), delivered over eight weekly group sessions lasting 30 to 40 minutes each. Training content includes topics like the concept of assertiveness, types of behavior, assertiveness techniques, dealing with criticism, saying "No", disappointment, relaxation exercises, and general application discussions. Virtual reality glasses will present scenario-based videos addressing common communication challenges and effective responses, with sessions conducted individually for each nurse. A control group will not receive training but will complete data collection forms. Participants will complete several assessments before and after the intervention, including the Voltan-Acar Self-Determination Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Emotion Expression Scale, and an Assertiveness Skills Form. Data collection occurs at two designated times: before the training and after its completion. The study monitors changes in communication and emotional expression, aiming to strengthen nurses' assertiveness skills through immersive virtual reality experiences over an 8-week period.
