What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how periodontal health and smoking relate to levels of certain inflammasomes and inflammatory proteins in saliva. This study aims to explore whether these salivary markers can help distinguish people with periodontitis from those without, and to understand how smoking may influence this relationship. Participants will be grouped based on smoking and periodontal status to clarify these links. Participants will be divided into four groups: healthy individuals, smokers with healthy gums, nonsmokers with advanced periodontitis, and smokers with advanced periodontitis. Clinical periodontal examinations will be conducted to measure plaque, probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level, number of teeth, and periodontal inflammatory surface area. Saliva samples will be collected and stored before analysis, with levels of inflammasomes and cytokines measured using an ELISA test. During the study, medical and dental histories including smoking habits will be recorded, followed by detailed oral examinations and saliva collection. Researchers will assess clinical attachment levels, probing depths, and bleeding on probing as primary outcomes. Secondary measures include plaque percentage, periodontal inflammatory surface area, and salivary levels of specific inflammasomes and interleukins. The study is observational, with no treatment administered, and participation lasts through initial assessments only.
