What this Trial Is About
Gastric cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death worldwide, especially in Eastern Asia. Although its rates are declining, the survival for early gastric cancer is much higher than for advanced stages. Intestinal-type gastric cancers often develop through a progression involving inflammation, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia, and cancer. This study focuses on understanding how atrophic gastritis affects the risk of developing gastric cancer in a high-risk region. Participants undergo different schedules of esophagogastroscopy based on their operative link on gastritis assessment (OLGA) stage. Those with OLGA stages 0 to I have surveillance endoscopies planned between years 3 to 5, those with OLGA II are monitored every 2 to 3 years, and those with OLGA III to IV receive annual endoscopies. These procedures help track changes in the gastric mucosa over time. Throughout the study, participants will have biopsies collected according to the updated Sydney system recommendations. Researchers will monitor the occurrence of early gastric neoplasms, with surveillance intervals adjusted by OLGA stage. The study includes safety follow-up and aims to observe participants from 18 up to 70 years old who can give informed consent. This monitoring approach supports assessment of how atrophic gastritis may predict gastric cancer risk.
