What this Trial Is About

Gastric cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, particularly in Eastern Asia. This research focuses on the role of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia as key risk factors for developing gastric cancer. The study aims to investigate the rate of gastric cancer linked to atrophic gastritis in a high-risk population through a prospective cohort design. Participants will undergo surveillance endoscopies according to their level of gastritis severity classified by the operative link on gastritis assessment (OLGA). Those with OLGA stages 0-I will have endoscopies every 3 to 5 years, OLGA II every 2 to 3 years, and OLGA III-IV annually. This observational approach helps monitor early gastric neoplasms among different risk groups. During the study, participants will be monitored with scheduled endoscopies over several years depending on their OLGA classification. The main outcome measured is the development of early gastric neoplasms, tracked through these follow-up endoscopies. The study spans many years, with ongoing evaluations to understand cancer risk related to atrophic gastritis and mucosal changes.
