Researchers are evaluating Baba, a novel AI care copilot designed to enhance emotional well-being, cognitive engagement, and social connection for older adults. This study focuses on how older adults interact with Baba, how it fits into their daily lives, and whether it can support improvements in well-being and self-management. The findings aim to inform the potential use of AI companions in promoting independent aging. Participants will receive daily or nearly daily phone calls from Baba over a 12-week period. Baba operates through SMS text and voice calls without requiring apps, Wi-Fi, or new devices, making it accessible and easy to use for older adults. The AI system uses a fine-tuned language model to hold conversations, analyze emotional cues, and log call summaries and risk alerts for caregiver review. During the study, participants interactions with Baba will be monitored alongside assessments of loneliness using the UCLA Loneliness Scale and mood using the Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-9 and the Geriatric Depression Scale GDS, all measured at 12 weeks. The study tracks how well participants engage with Baba, their emotional and cognitive responses, and any changes in well-being. The total participation duration is 12 weeks, with ongoing evaluations throughout this time.

This table compares participation in this trial with other options available for this condition. The information is drawn from published research and the trial’s study details and is provided for educational purposes only.
| Factors | AI phone companion | Telephone befriending support |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An AI phone companion using a fine‑tuned language model to converse with older adults, tracking emotional tone, summarizing calls, and flagging risk for caregiver review | A structured phone‑based support programme delivered by a person (e.g. volunteer or counsellor) using befriending or behavioural activation techniques |
| Role in the study | Active intervention arm receiving weekly conversations with AI over 12 weeks | Represents usual phone‑based social support that an older adult could access outside the study |
| Primary use | To reduce loneliness and monitor mood changes in older adults through conversational AI | To alleviate loneliness through regular human phone contact using supportive conversation techniques |
| How it is given or performed | Participants receive scheduled phone calls from the AI system, with conversation analysis, summaries and risk flags for caregiver review | Participants receive scheduled supportive phone calls from a trained person using empathy‑based or behavioural activation scripts |
| Evidence status | Efficacy is being evaluated; no published results yet | Evidence from trials shows telephone‑based interventions can modestly reduce loneliness among older adults |
| Important risks | Unknown risks; monitoring alerts may trigger follow‑up actions but user‑experience effects are untested | Minimal known risks; risks relate mainly to privacy or incidental emotional distress during calls |
| Important limitations | Unproven AI approach, requires ability to engage by phone and no significant cognitive or hearing impairment | Requires availability of trained volunteers or staff and assumes access to telephone and adequate hearing |
