What this Trial Is About
This research focuses on developing and improving ways to assess children both with and without perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAS) or hemiparetic cerebral palsy (HCP). The study aims to understand arm and hand behaviors as well as other areas of child development such as fine motor skills, gross motor skills, language, cognition, and social-emotional abilities. It uses data from a previous randomized controlled trial called I-ACQUIRE and includes a new observational study of typically developing children to compare developmental progress. The study does not provide any treatment or intervention. Instead, it collects data through a comprehensive set of assessments involving play and developmental skills over time. The focus is on observing and measuring behaviors related to reaching and grasping. The research will validate new methods for evaluating upper extremity function that may help guide future treatment strategies for children with motor disabilities. Participants will be observed from enrollment through their last assessment over a period of 7 months. Researchers will use video recordings and various developmental tests to track fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development. The study will monitor how the new Behavioral Assessment Methods (BAM) relate to these skills in both typically developing and affected children. The goal is to create reliable tools for ongoing pediatric physical rehabilitation assessment.
