What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating an online educational program called Brain Health PRO (BHPro) designed to reduce modifiable risk factors for dementia. The study targets adults aged 50 to 80 who are at increased risk of dementia, aiming to promote lifestyle changes that support brain health. The trial is randomized and double-blinded, focusing on preventing dementia through lifestyle intervention in a diverse Canadian population. Participants will be randomly assigned to either start the BHPro program immediately or after a 6-month delay. The BHPro intervention lasts 6 months and is fully online, providing education on lifestyle changes that may reduce dementia risk. After the initial 6-month intervention, all participants will have open access to the program content for an additional 12 months. During the study, participants will complete online assessments related to dementia risk factors, cognition, self-efficacy, and dementia knowledge. Researchers will measure changes in a 7-item composite dementia risk factor score after 6 months and track individual lifestyle factors such as physical activity, nutrition, sleep, cognitive engagement, social and psychological health, vascular health, and vision and hearing. The total study participation ranges from 18 to 24 months depending on group assignment.
