What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating a brief culturally adapted behavioral activation therapy for adults with depression in Indonesian primary care settings. This study has two main goals: to see if this therapy, delivered by primary care psychologists in face-to-face sessions, effectively reduces depressive symptoms, and to assess how training and supervision of psychologists affect the therapy's acceptability, feasibility, appropriateness, and delivery quality. The study addresses the challenge of treating depression in lower-income countries and aims to improve mental health care integration into primary care. The study randomly assigns twelve primary health centers into two groups. Six centers form the intervention group where selected psychologists receive online training and ongoing supervision to deliver three face-to-face therapy sessions to adult patients. The other six centers provide usual depression treatment without specific training or restrictions on therapy type or session number. Training includes four online sessions, two booster sessions, and supervision through biweekly online meetings and continuous support. Participants will be adults aged 18 to 65 years with depression, screened by the PHQ-9 questionnaire. The study measures changes in depressive symptoms using the PHQ-9 one week after therapy, and gathers feedback on therapy acceptability and feasibility from both patients and providers. Additional assessments include remission rates, anxiety levels, behavioral activation, and quality of life up to one month post-intervention. The study involves interviews and questionnaires over approximately three months to evaluate both clinical and implementation outcomes.
