What this Trial Is About

Researchers are conducting a multicenter observational study to identify causes and risk factors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) linked to chronic diseases and lifestyle behaviors. This study aims to develop a prediction model to identify high-risk populations and discover new biomarkers related to OHCA occurrence, survival, and disabilities. The study is based in 14 tertiary teaching hospital emergency departments in Korea and includes adults aged 19 to 79 years. The study involves two groups: cases and controls. Cases are adult patients who experienced EMS-treated OHCA and were transported to participating hospitals. These cases will be followed up by telephone at 1, 6, and 12 months after emergency department discharge to collect data on survival, disabilities, and quality of life. Controls are matched community members attending health screening centers for routine exams, selected in a 2:1 ratio to cases. Clinical data, survey data on lifestyle and comorbidities, and blood samples for biomarker development will be collected from both groups. Participants will provide extensive information including medical records, lifestyle surveys, and blood samples. Survivors among the OHCA cases will be monitored over one year to assess outcomes and quality of life. The main outcome measured is the number of OHCA cases enrolled during the study period. The study runs from September 2017 until December 2023, with ongoing data collection and follow-up, aiming to improve understanding and prediction of OHCA risks and outcomes.

Screening

Duration - 2 to 4 weeks

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.

1 visit (in-person)

Diagnostic Evaluation

Duration - Ongoing during enrollment period

Participants undergo clinical assessments and blood sample collection to evaluate health status and biomarkers related to cardiac arrest.

1 visit for cases transported to emergency departments; 1 visit for controls at health screening centers

Long-term Monitoring

Duration - Up to 12 months post discharge for cases; annual routine physicals for controls

Survived cardiac arrest cases are followed up by telephone to collect survival, disability, and quality of life outcomes at 1-month, 6-month, and 12-month after emergency department discharge. Controls are observed through their routine annual physical examinations.

3 telephone follow-up contacts for cases; 1 annual visit for controls
