What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating a hospital-based Cardio-Oncology Rehabilitation (CORe) program designed for cancer patients who are undergoing treatments that may harm the heart. This observational study focuses on assessing health outcomes related to cardiovascular health, functional capacity, and quality of life in patients at risk of cardiotoxicity. The program builds on previous cardiac rehabilitation experience and aims to improve cancer care by integrating supervised exercise as an essential component. Participants will engage in a 3-month supervised exercise program offered in two formats: center-based, with sessions twice a week lasting one hour each under physiotherapist supervision, and home-based, which includes physical exercise recommendations and motivational phone calls every two weeks. The choice of program depends on the patient's functional assessment and agreement with healthcare professionals. Assessments occur at the start (baseline), after 3 months of exercise, and at a 9-month follow-up. During the study, participants will undergo various evaluations including heart function measurements using echocardiography, blood tests for cardiac biomarkers and cholesterol, assessment of physical capacity, and quality of life questionnaires. These measures are repeated at baseline, after 3 months, and at 9 months, with some outcomes monitored yearly for up to 5 years. Safety is tracked by recording any adverse cardiovascular or non-cardiovascular events throughout the study.

Your Study Journey

Screening

Duration - 2 to 4 weeks

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.

Participants must be able to complete a cardio-oncology rehabilitation program and provide informed consent.

Monitoring

Duration - Up to 9 months from baseline

Participants who undergo routine cardio-oncology rehabilitation care are observed to assess cardiovascular health and quality of life.

Baseline visit followed by visits at 3 months after completing the exercise program and at 9 months from baseline, with annual visits up to 5 years after study completion.

Exercise-based Cardio-Oncology Rehabilitation

Duration - Approximately 3 months

Participants engage in supervised or home-based exercise programs including strength, aerobic, and mobility exercises to improve cardiovascular health and functional capacity.

Center-based participants attend 2 supervised sessions per week; home-based participants receive biweekly telephone follow-up.
