What this Trial Is About
Carbon monoxide poisoning is a common household accident and the leading cause of death from unintended poisoning. It causes harm by binding to hemoglobin and myoglobin, inhibiting mitochondrial function, leading to low oxygen levels in tissues, reduced energy production, and injury from lack of blood flow and oxygen return. This research investigates the early and late heart effects of carbon monoxide in patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This is a single-center retrospective study that collects health and history data from patients who received HBOT for carbon monoxide poisoning between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2021. Patients with early heart symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are also interviewed by phone. One month before starting interviews, patients receive an information letter by mail allowing them to opt out. Participants provide health data and answer phone interviews about their heart condition after poisoning. Researchers look at early and late heart injuries caused by carbon monoxide and examine links between poisoning source, context, related poisonings, neurological symptoms, and prior heart risks or abnormalities. The study is conducted by the University Hospital in Brest and runs until October 25, 2024.
