What this Trial Is About
Adolescents, especially those in vocational education, often experience poor sleep quality which can impact their mental, cognitive, and physical health. This research aims to evaluate how a healthy sleep intervention can be implemented among first and second year secondary students aged 12 to 14 and their teachers in vocational education. The goal is to understand the process of introducing this intervention to reduce health differences among adolescents and eventually provide a ready-made package for Flemish secondary schools. The study involves a single arm with three main parts: a co-creation process where selected students and teachers adapt the existing healthy sleep intervention to their school's needs; a one-time training for teachers explaining the importance of sleep and how to implement the intervention supported by manuals and consultations; and the school-wide delivery of the adapted intervention to all first and second year secondary students. The healthy sleep intervention lasts nine weeks and covers five themes including sleep importance, sleep cycles, screen time, exercise and nutrition, and mental well-being. Activities include posters, social media posts, class discussions, biology lessons, competitions using an app, planners, exercise breaks, notebooks for worries, and parent information flyers. Participants will be involved in the intervention and monitored during its implementation over three months. Researchers will evaluate the process from enrollment to the end of intervention delivery, focusing on how well it is put into practice. The study includes students and teachers from vocational education, with assessments guided by feedback and consultation sessions. The overall participation involves active engagement in the intervention activities and evaluation to help shape future school-wide sleep health programs.
