What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating the relationship between knee osteoarthritis KOA and the characteristics of skeletal muscle, particularly focusing on the quadriceps muscle. This study aims to understand how fat tissue in the knee area and within the quadriceps muscle may influence KOA development and progression. The trial is observational and involves adults with KOA who require total knee replacement surgery. The study involves collecting surgical waste tissue samples from patients undergoing total knee replacement. Specifically, researchers will compare the Hoffa adipose tissue and intramuscular fat IMF tissue in the quadriceps muscle. These comparisons will look at differences in fat cell size, lipid levels, and fibrotic tissue between the two types of fat tissue. Participants will provide tissue samples during their knee replacement surgery, which are then analyzed by the research team. The primary outcomes measured include the size of adipose tissue, lipid content, and the amount of fibrotic tissue in both Hoffa and intramuscular fat tissues. The study does not involve additional interventions or treatments and will be completed over a period of approximately four months after sample collection.
