Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a type of heart failure where the heart does not pump blood properly, causing symptoms like breathlessness, tiredness, and swollen feet or ankles. The reasons why people develop HFpEF are not well understood, and current treatment options are limited. This observational study called TRAITS-HFpEF aims to better understand the causes of HFpEF, identify new tests and treatments, and gather information about the life expectancy of people living with this condition by collecting routine data from patients attending a specialized outpatient HFpEF clinic. The study involves recruiting approximately 1,250 patients who visit the HFpEF clinic at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust over a 5-year period. With patient consent, a blood sample of about 10mL may be taken for biobanking to study potential new biomarkers, including plasma and DNA. All clinical information will be collected and documented at the time of recruitment to help identify different HFpEF patient types and their outcomes. Participants will be observed over approximately 7.5 years to monitor outcomes such as overall mortality and hospitalizations due to heart failure. Researchers will regularly collect clinical data and track patient health status during this time. The study will help characterize HFpEF patient groups and inform future research and specialist care strategies. Participation involves routine clinic visits and optional blood sample collection, with no study treatments administered.
