What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying alcohol use in college students aged 18 to 25 to see if personalized goal setting combined with protective behavioral strategies (PBS) can increase the use of these strategies to reduce risk and harm from drinking. The study compares three groups: a control group, a group using PBS only, and a group using both PBS and goal setting. This research aims to find out if using PBS more often leads to less alcohol consumption, fewer negative effects, and more positive consequences related to drinking. Participants receive psychoeducation about PBS and either no additional intervention (control), PBS-only intervention where they select three protective strategies and a reminder method, or PBS plus goal-setting where they also set two goals for each chosen strategy. The study lasts two weeks, with participants in all groups completing baseline and follow-up assessments. The PBS-only and PBS+Goals groups report on their use of reminder strategies, and the PBS+Goals group also reports if they achieved their goals. During the study, participants complete questionnaires about their use of protective strategies, alcohol use, and related positive or negative consequences at the start and after two weeks. They also share their confidence and willingness to change their drinking habits and strategy use. Researchers monitor these outcomes to understand the effects of the interventions. The total participation time is two weeks with assessments at baseline and follow-up.
