What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying how stressful experiences related to personal and daily life events may lead to alcohol and cannabis use, focusing on adults of Afro-descent aged 18 to 30. The research aims to find potential ways to prevent and treat substance use by examining the effects of stress on cravings and intoxication. This work is conducted by the University of Washington and targets alcohol and cannabis use behaviors. The study compares three types of stress experiences: a direct negative interpersonal event experienced personally, a vicarious negative event heard or observed through someone of the same background, and common daily stressors related to school, work, or finances. These are behavioral interventions designed to simulate different stress situations, with participants randomly assigned to one of these groups. Participants will be assessed for their craving for alcohol or cannabis immediately after the stress intervention and monitored for the duration of intoxication over the following 48 hours. The study involves tracking momentary responses to these stressors and their impact on substance use. This trial allows healthy volunteers aged 18 to 30 who use alcohol or cannabis and have used these substances to cope with stress. The total participation timeline extends through the assessments following the interventions.
