Community Workshop and Coaching to Empower Actions Against Cancer in Western New York

What this Trial Is About

This research aims to evaluate a community health education intervention called I CAN designed to empower community members to take action in reducing the cancer burden in Western New York. The study focuses on increasing community-driven activities and partnerships, addressing calls from leaders at various levels to involve communities in health program development and policies. It includes examining the feasibility and acceptability of the I CAN intervention and its impact on lung cancer screening behaviors and knowledge. Participants are assigned to one of two phases. In Phase I, participants attend a 2-hour I CAN intervention workshop. In Phase 2, community-based programs are randomized into two groups, and participants attend the same 2-hour workshop two weeks later, they receive a coaching call to discuss their progress and revise their action plans. The intervention includes presentations, skill-building activities, and motivational components to encourage community action. During the study, participants engage in workshops and coaching calls, with assessments conducted up to 2 years to measure demand, practicality, acceptability of the intervention, and lung cancer screening uptake. Researchers evaluate participants lung cancer screening knowledge, self-efficacy, adherence to recommended screenings, and the effectiveness of the intervention compared to control groups. The total participation period extends up to two years, including follow-up assessments.
