What this Trial Is About

This research aims to compare the effects of high-intensity interval training and continuous endurance training on blood sugar control, fitness, and lung function in adults with prediabetes. Prediabetes is a state where blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Timely intervention during this phase is important to help delay or prevent progression to diabetes. The study is a randomized controlled trial enrolling 80 participants from Riphah International University, Lahore. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two exercise groups for a 12-week period. Group A will perform high-intensity interval training involving short bursts of intense exercise followed by rest or low-intensity recovery. Group B will engage in continuous endurance training at moderate intensity without rest intervals. Each session includes warm-up and cool-down periods. Both exercise regimens are designed to assess their impact on glycemic control, body mass index, maximal oxygen uptake VO2 max, pulmonary function, and physical activity levels. Throughout the study, participants will be evaluated before and after the intervention for fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, insulin sensitivity, lung function tests FEV1, FVC, FEV1FVC ratio, BMI, VO2 max using graded exercise testing, and physical activity via a validated questionnaire. Data will be analyzed to determine which training method may be more beneficial for prediabetic patients. The total study duration spans approximately 8 months from approval, with the active intervention lasting 12 weeks.
