What this Trial Is About

This research aims to understand how often severe anaesthesia-related complications happen during airway endoscopy in children with tracheostomy. It focuses on children under 18 years old who have a tracheostomy and need routine airway checks under general anaesthesia. The study also explores whether factors like age at tracheostomy, ventilator dependence, or past airway problems affect the risk of complications. The study observes children undergoing surveillance airway endoscopies at the Long-term Intensive Care Unit at Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden from 2025 to 2026. These procedures are part of regular follow-up to detect airway issues early. Anaesthesia is provided following standard care, and any complications during or immediately after the procedure are recorded by the anaesthesiologist. Children may participate multiple times if they have repeat endoscopies during the study period. Participants will be monitored throughout the anaesthesia and recovery periods for complications such as hypoxemia, bronchospasm, aspiration, severe bradycardia, and hypothermia. Data on patient characteristics and risk factors are collected from medical records to analyze their link to complications. The main outcome is the rate of severe anaesthesiologic complications, with secondary outcomes examining associations with patient factors. The study duration is approximately three years, aiming for about 100 observations.
