What this Trial Is About
This research aims to determine if providing healthy food during pregnancy can reduce the number of women who gain excessive weight compared to enhanced standard care. The study will involve 1,440 pregnant women who will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The purpose is to assess the impact of food support on gestational weight gain and related pregnancy health outcomes. Participants will be divided into two groups. The first group, called Enhanced Standard of Care (ESoC), will receive standard nutritional counseling, help enrolling in food assistance programs like WIC and SNAP, and referrals to food aid organizations. The second group, called Delivering HOPE, will get all the same services as ESoC plus funds ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 during pregnancy to buy healthy foods, based on household size. During the study, data on weight before pregnancy and at delivery will be collected from birth records to measure excessive gestational weight gain. The study will last through approximately 40 weeks of pregnancy until postpartum. Researchers will monitor participants' nutritional counseling and use of food assistance, aiming to understand effects on weight gain and pregnancy complications related to diet and hypertension.
