What this Trial Is About

This research aims to explore the effects of respiratory training on lung function and physical capacity in children with beta-thalassemia major. Children with this condition require regular blood transfusions which can impact lung capacity, oxygen levels, and heart rate. The study focuses on improving their physical fitness to help them perform daily and leisure activities better, while also providing insights for physiotherapists on enhancing lung function in these children. Participants are divided into two groups: one group receives traditional breathing exercises for 30 minutes twice a month over three months, while the other group receives a combination of traditional breathing exercises for 15 minutes and incentive spirometer breathing exercises for 15 minutes on the same schedule. The breathing exercises include diaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing, and costal breathing, with specific techniques and durations tailored to each group. Throughout the study, researchers will monitor oxygen saturation and heart rate before exercises and immediately after blood transfusions. They will also assess lung function through tests measuring slow vital capacity, forced expiration, maximal voluntary ventilation, and functional capacity. The study includes regular evaluations of these measures to understand the impact of respiratory training on children aged 6 to 10 years with beta-thalassemia major. The total participation time is three months with twice monthly sessions.
