What this Trial Is About

Respiratory diseases are a leading cause of pediatric emergency visits, and managing these conditions effectively in children is essential. Inhaler therapy is widely used due to its quick action and ease, but its success depends on proper technique and adherence, especially by children and their parents. This study evaluates how a mastery learning-based educational program can improve inhaler use skills among children receiving inhaler therapy and their parents in a pediatric emergency department setting. The study has two phases. The first phase focuses on validating an Inhaler Therapy Application Checklist to assess parents' inhaler administration skills through expert review and statistical analyses. In the second phase, from October 2025 to October 2026, parents and children meeting criteria will participate. Mothers in the intervention group will receive face-to-face practical training using brochures and hospital-standard inhaler masks, practicing each step for about 15-20 minutes before inhaler administration. Their skills will be evaluated multiple times during hospitalization. The control group will receive routine care with initial skill assessments. Participants will be involved in completing consent and information forms, with mothers' inhaler techniques assessed at different times using the checklist. Anxiety levels of mothers will also be measured after procedures. The primary outcome is the validity and reliability of the checklist over 12 months. The trial uses randomized allocation without blinding and aims to follow participants from initial emergency treatment through repeated inhaler use during hospitalization.

Your Study Journey

Screening

Duration - 2 to 4 weeks

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.

1 visit (in-person)

Baseline Assessment

Duration - Day 1

Parents provide informed consent and complete baseline forms. Mothers' initial inhaler administration skills are evaluated using the Inhaler Therapy Application Checklist.

1 visit (in-person)

Routine Care and Observation

Duration - Up to 6 hours

Participants receive routine hospital education on inhaler use. Mothers' inhaler application skills are evaluated during the second inhaler administration following routine nursing education and reassessed 4 to 6 hours after hospitalization.

2 visits (in-person)

Parent Education Program (Intervention Group)

Duration - Approximately 1 day

Mothers receive face-to-face practical training using educational brochures and hospital-standard inhaler masks before the procedure. The training lasts approximately 15-20 minutes with demonstration and practical performance of each step. Mothers' inhaler skills are evaluated again during the subsequent inhaler therapy.

1 visit (in-person)

Anxiety Assessment

Duration - Same day as intervention or routine care

Mothers' anxiety levels are assessed after the inhaler procedure in both intervention and control groups.
