What this Trial Is About
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a widespread but preventable condition marked by chronic inflammation in the lungs, leading to breathing difficulties and reduced physical activity. Cognitive and physical impairments frequently affect COPD patients, impacting their quality of life. This research investigates the effects of virtual reality-supported dual-task training on brain and muscle oxygenation in people with COPD, aiming to explore new rehabilitation methods that improve both cognitive and physical functions. The study randomly assigns 30 COPD patients into two groups for a 6-week program. One group receives conventional physiotherapy and rehabilitation including breathing exercises and muscle strengthening performed at home. The other group receives the same conventional therapy plus virtual reality-assisted dual-task training involving walking and cognitive challenges through a VR headset, supervised three times a week. This is intended to stimulate brain oxygenation and cognitive engagement alongside physical training. Participants undergo assessments before and after the intervention measuring respiratory muscle strength, lung function, fatigue, balance, functional capacity, daily activities, cognitive function, and oxygenation levels in brain and muscles. The study also monitors heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and fatigue severity to evaluate changes. Results will provide insights into effective non-drug therapies to enhance physical and cognitive health in COPD patients over the six-week treatment period.
