Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Patients in ICU who can give consent or have an authorized representative to consent for them
- Age 18 years or older
- Leading cause of critical illness is not cancer
- Newly admitted to the participating ICU for more than 72 hours
- ICU physician assesses a need for palliative care due to disagreement about treatment, consideration of therapy limitations, or potential benefit from specialized palliative care consultation
- At least one relative of a patient willing to participate
- Employment as a doctor or nurse on the intensive care unit or as a member of the palliative care consultation service
You will not qualify if you...
- Patient is moribund and expected to die within 24 hours
- Relatives who refuse to participate
- Patient refusal to participate in the intervention study
- Under 18 years of age for relatives
- Employees who refuse to participate
