What this Trial Is About
This research focuses on people who have a gummy smile, where excessive gum tissue shows when smiling. The study evaluates whether a computer program using artificial intelligence AI can identify and measure gummy smiles from photographs as accurately as expert dentists. This pilot study aims to assess the diagnostic accuracy of AI in gummy smile diagnosis and treatment planning compared to conventional manual methods. Participants seen at Cairo Universitys Periodontics and Orthodontics clinics will have photos of their smiles taken. These photos will first be used to train the AI program to recognize and measure gummy smiles. Then, the AI will be tested on a new set of photos, with its measurements compared to those made by expert dentists. This process includes validation and post-analytical phases occurring during months 5 to 8 of the study. During the study, researchers will compare the AI programs measurements against the gold standard manual measurements by periodontists. The study will measure the diagnostic accuracy of the AI software and its effectiveness in treatment planning. Participants involvement primarily includes having their smile photographs taken, with no treatment intervention. The total study duration runs until December 2026, with ongoing data analysis and comparison during the later months.
