What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how eye movements and activity in the autonomic nervous system ANS relate to the effects of ADHD medication in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years diagnosed with ADHD. This observational study aims to improve understanding of why ADHD medications work well for some patients but cause side effects or lack effectiveness for others. The study focuses on objective measures such as eye movements, pupil dilation, pupillary light reflex, and heart rate variability to explore their connection to medication response and side effects. Participants will be children and adolescents about to start ADHD medication, specifically methylphenidate, as part of their usual care. Before beginning medication, researchers will record eye and pupil movements using eye-tracking technology and measure heart rate variability through a 10-minute pulse recording. These measurements will be repeated approximately 2 to 3 months later, after medication use, to assess changes. Symptoms and side effects will also be evaluated before and after medication use using standardized rating scales. During the study, participants will undergo eye-tracking assessments, heart rate monitoring, and complete symptom and side effect questionnaires at two time points before starting medication and at a follow-up 2 to 3 months later. Researchers will analyze whether pre-medication measures predict medication response and side effects, and how these measures change with treatment. The primary outcome is the responder status based on symptom improvement after three months, and secondary outcomes include the number of side effects experienced. The total participation duration spans this baseline to follow-up period, with no additional long-term follow-up reported.
