What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying a co-designed mobility intervention called HIP-ME-UP to support early and frequent movement in older adults hospitalized after hip fracture surgery. Hip fractures often cause loss of independence and complications, and many patients remain inactive despite recommendations for early mobilization. This study aims to see if the HIP-ME-UP intervention can be delivered as planned, is acceptable to patients and healthcare staff, and fits into routine hospital care. The HIP-ME-UP intervention includes four key parts: a dedicated porter assisting with mobility activities led by physiotherapists and occupational therapists, standardized training to help patients get in and out of bed independently, group exercises supervised by physiotherapists, and encouragement of personal daily activities like using the bathroom when possible. Participants will receive this intervention during their hospital stay in orthopedic wards over about an 8-week period. Participants will be monitored for recruitment and retention rates, how well the intervention is delivered, and its acceptability through questionnaires and interviews. Mobility, physical activity, pain, and quality of life will also be recorded to help interpret the findings. Data collection will continue up to four months after discharge to evaluate feasibility and support decisions about future larger studies.

You may qualify if you...

  • Age 60 years or older
  • Admitted to one of the two acute orthopedic wards at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre following hip fracture surgery
  • Pre-fracture Cumulated Ambulation Score of 3 points or higher indicating independence or assisted independence in basic mobility activities
  • Able to provide informed consent independently or through a legally authorized proxy
  • Inclusion no later than the third day after surgery
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Non-ambulatory before the fracture, such as permanently bedbound or wheelchair-dependent
  • Terminal illness with limited expected survival
  • Post-operative weight-bearing restrictions preventing mobility activities
  • Multiple fractures or suspected pathological fractures related to malignancy
  • Clinically unstable or conditions where early mobilization is contraindicated
  • Previous participation in HIP-ME-UP Study 4 to avoid repeated involvement in related studies

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.

1 screening and enrollment visit (in-person)

Inpatient Treatment

Duration - Approximately 8 weeks during hospitalization

Participants receive the HIP-ME-UP mobility intervention, which includes support for early and frequent mobility through structured mobility activities, supervised group exercise, and encouragement of daily living activities during their hospitalization after hip fracture surgery.

Ongoing visits during hospitalization as part of routine care

Follow-up

Duration - Up to 4 months post-discharge

Participants are followed up to assess retention, data completeness, and acceptability of the intervention after discharge from the hospital.
