Testing the Good Boost Exercise and Support Program for Adults Waiting for Knee Replacement Surgery

What this Trial Is About

This research aims to find out if it is feasible to run a larger study of the Good Boost community-based rehabilitation programme for adults waiting for primary total knee replacement surgery. The study focuses on recruitment willingness, participant retention, adherence to the Good Boost programme, and the acceptability of the programme to patients, NHS staff, and leisure centre staff. It also explores factors that help or hinder the delivery of the programme in real-world NHS and community settings. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups usual NHS pre-operative care or usual NHS care plus the Good Boost programme. The Good Boost programme includes six weekly group water-based exercise sessions in local swimming pools using a waterproof tablet app, combined with three weekly land-based exercise sessions accessed through a smartphone or tablet app. Physiotherapy staff provide weekly remote support, and refreshments are offered after pool sessions to encourage social connection. The control group receives usual NHS care only. Participants will complete weekly exercise diaries and rate their knee pain each week. Short questionnaires will be completed at 6 and 10 weeks after randomisation. The study collects data on recruitment, retention, adherence, and data completeness. Researchers will monitor intervention delivery fidelity through session observations and physiotherapist support session recordings. Qualitative interviews with participants and staff will explore experiences and acceptability. The total study period includes setup, recruitment, intervention delivery, data collection, and analysis, with no formal interim analyses planned.

Feasibility of Good Boost+ for Adults Awaiting Total Knee Replacement
