Those with preoperative anemia are more likely to need blood transfusions during surgery and afterward, which can lead to worse outcomes, longer hospital stays, and higher risks of complications and death. Researchers are evaluating adherence to a newly implemented preoperative anemia management guideline at Siriraj Preanesthesia Assessment Center (SIPAC) to optimize patient care before elective surgeries and improve overall outcomes. The guideline focuses on managing anemia before surgery to increase red blood cell mass and reduce the need for transfusions. Patients with anemia attending the preanesthesia clinic are assessed according to this protocol. The study observes how well the guideline is followed and its impact on perioperative transfusion rates and other clinical outcomes. This observational study uses data from the SIPAC department of anesthesiology at Siriraj Hospital. Participants attend the preanesthesia clinic where their anemia is evaluated based on hemoglobin levels and specific criteria. Researchers track protocol adherence for about one month and monitor perioperative transfusion within one month after surgery. The study aims to use these findings to improve anemia evaluation and management workflows, reduce transfusions, shorten hospital stays, lower morbidity, and decrease healthcare costs in Thailand.
