What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating an integrated discharge monitoring system using a mobile application to support patients recovering at home after colorectal surgery, which includes surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other benign conditions. The study aims to reduce unplanned hospital visits such as readmissions and emergency room visits, which cause distress to patients and increase healthcare costs. This randomized controlled trial is conducted at three hospitals across Canada to compare the new system with standard follow-up care. Patients in the intervention group will receive usual care plus access to a mobile app provided during their hospital stay. The app includes daily health check questionnaires sent via email from the day of discharge up to 30 days post-discharge, with summaries and action recommendations based on patient responses. The healthcare team monitors responses in real time through a secure website that flags concerning symptoms for prompt follow-up. The control group receives standard follow-up care without the app. Participants will be monitored for unplanned hospital visits within 30 days after discharge, and their quality of recovery and confidence in managing their own healthcare will be assessed four weeks after discharge. The study involves patient questionnaires, monitoring through the app, and follow-up contact as needed. The entire participation period covers at least 30 days post-discharge, with ongoing data collection to evaluate the app's impact on recovery and healthcare use.
