What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how frequent use of electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, affects microvascular health in young adults aged 18 to 29. The study aims to understand the impact of e-cigarette use on the body's oxygen utilization and overall microvascular function, addressing gaps in current knowledge about e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional tobacco smoking. This observational study is led by Virginia Commonwealth University and focuses on comparing microvascular responses between regular e-cigarette users and individuals who have never used e-cigarettes. Participants are divided into two groups based on their e-cigarette usage: those who use e-cigarettes with nicotine at least three times per week for six months or more, and those who have never used e-cigarettes. The study involves assessing endothelial dependent dilation and neurogenic responses, which are measures of microvascular health. Each participant's involvement in these assessments lasts for about one week. During the study week, participants undergo various evaluations to measure their vascular responses and microvascular function. These assessments help researchers understand how chronic e-cigarette use may influence cardiovascular and neurogenic health factors. The study also screens for health conditions and medication use that could affect cardiopulmonary health. The total commitment for each participant is one week, during which their microvascular health is carefully monitored and analyzed.
