What this Trial Is About
This research aims to improve the cardiovascular health of home health aides, a workforce with historically poor heart health and high risks including obesity, hypertension, and smoking. The study focuses on evaluating the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) program, developed by the American Heart Association, which promotes heart wellness through education and lifestyle changes. The program is adapted specifically for home health aides and delivered by trained peer coaches who are fellow aides, helping to support positive thinking and healthy behaviors. Participants will receive the 10-session adapted LE8 program over 6 months, with sessions delivered through a hybrid model of in-person and virtual meetings. Each home health aide will be paired with a trained peer coach who guides them through bi-weekly 1:1 sessions via Zoom or phone, providing cardiovascular education, goal setting, and cognitive training to replace negative thinking with positive habits. Educational materials are provided via paper-based booklets. Throughout the study, participants' cardiovascular health will be assessed using the LE8 cardiovascular health score at the start and end of the 6-month program. Researchers will also evaluate program acceptability, feasibility, adherence, and satisfaction through surveys and interviews. Secondary measures include changes in social support, self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. The total participation duration is 6 months with ongoing monitoring and data collection.
