Screening and Care for Kidney Disease, Diabetes, and High Blood Pressure in Indigenous Communities Across Canada

What this Trial Is About

Indigenous people living in rural and remote communities across Manitoba, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario face higher risks of Chronic Kidney Disease CKD, diabetes, and high blood pressure compared to the general population. This research aims to perform point-of-care testing to identify these conditions early and provide tailored treatment plans. The study seeks to develop a durable CKD surveillance system to reduce the burden of kidney disease and kidney failure in these communities. Participants will receive point-of-care screening conducted by a registered nurse, including demographic and physical data collection, and blood and urine testing. Results are provided during the appointment, and those at high risk of kidney failure are referred to nephrologists, while others receive guidance for primary care follow-up. This approach supports early diagnosis and treatment in both adults and children. Throughout the study, participants will undergo assessments of kidney function biomarkers, diabetes status, blood pressure, and kidney failure risk during the screening visit. The process includes real-time testing and counseling, aiming to ensure ongoing care and monitoring. The total involvement includes one screening day, with follow-up care coordinated based on individual risk levels to help prevent CKD progression and kidney failure.
