What this Trial Is About
This research aims to describe the typical psychiatric and medical characteristics of adults admitted to NHS General Adult Psychiatry (GAP) inpatient wards. The study will focus on 100 adults aged 18 to 65 with mental disorders not treatable by their general practitioners. It seeks to understand how these patients differ from those usually included in clinical trials, potentially explaining why some trial results do not translate well to real-life treatment. Participants will undergo questionnaires, rating scales, and a review of their medical notes to collect comprehensive data. The study is observational and cross-sectional, with no treatment or intervention beyond these assessments. Participants will spend about an hour completing questionnaires and discussing with clinicians at the psychiatric ward or outpatient department. During the study, researchers will evaluate psychiatric diagnoses, severity of symptoms such as psychosis, depression, mania, anxiety, substance use, and physical health conditions. They will also review mental health legal status, treatment resistance, physical examinations, and lab results. The data collected will help compare typical GAP patients to those in clinical trials and provide a baseline for future research. Participants may withdraw at any time, and minimal personal information will be collected to protect privacy.
