Minnesota RETAIN Phase 3 Program to Support Workers Staying at or Returning to Work After Injury or Illness

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the impact of the Minnesota RETAIN Phase 3 program, which aims to support workers in staying at or returning to work after injury or illness. This non-randomized trial focuses on workforce retention and reducing future workplace disability across Minnesota. The program is funded by the US Department of Education and involves collaboration among Mayo Clinic, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development DEED, and other stakeholders to implement early intervention best practices. Participants in the study will be assigned a dedicated Minnesota RETAIN Return-to-Work Case Manager who works as part of the healthcare team. This case manager helps coordinate referrals between healthcare providers and workforce development services. They ensure that work restrictions are properly documented and communicated to employers. Additional career and workforce development resources will be provided as needed. The study primarily involves this intervention with no randomization or placebo control. During the study, participants employment status will be monitored, with a primary outcome focused on maintaining employment six months after enrollment. Secondary measures will track statewide engagement over three years. Researchers will assess the effectiveness of early intervention strategies through regular evaluations. The study is expected to continue through September 2029, with participants involved in ongoing coordination and support from case managers to facilitate their return to work or continued employment.
