What this Trial Is About

Researchers are exploring how technological translation tools can improve access to out-of-hours primary care services for Dutch-speaking citizens in Brussels, where language barriers exist between Dutch-speaking patients and predominantly French-speaking general practitioners. The study aims to identify both obstacles and helpful factors in using these tools during consultations between Dutch-speaking patients and French-speaking GPs. This qualitative research involves various stakeholders including patients, doctors, and organizational representatives. Participants will join one of four online focus group sessions, each lasting 60 to 90 minutes, with up to 10 people per group. These groups will discuss the use of different technological options such as video interpreting and translation apps to overcome language communication challenges in Brussels out-of-hours care. The goal is to find effective ways to facilitate communication and improve care for Dutch-speaking patients. During the focus groups, participants will share their experiences and views on the barriers and facilitators to using these translation tools. The study will collect this feedback to better understand how to lower the threshold for Dutch speakers to access care. About 40 adults who are Dutch-speaking patients, GPs, or representatives from relevant organizations will take part in this research, which will help guide improvements in healthcare communication and accessibility.
