Oral Health and Dental Care in Palliative Medicine: A Survey Study Among Patients and Members of the German Society for Palliative Medicine

Oral health problems like dry mouth and infections often affect patients receiving palliative care and can greatly reduce their quality of life. This research aims to understand how oral health is addressed in palliative care by surveying both patients and healthcare professionals who are members of the German Society for Palliative Medicine. The study focuses on patients' oral health status, quality of life related to oral health, access to dental care, and the knowledge and practices of palliative care professionals regarding dental care. The study is a prospective, non-interventional survey where palliative care patients complete a paper-based questionnaire about their oral health and related quality of life. Healthcare professionals will participate in an anonymous online survey exploring their knowledge, attitudes, and current practices concerning oral health in palliative care. No clinical treatments or examinations are performed as part of this study. Participants will complete the questionnaire once, with patients recruited directly and professionals invited via email and newsletters. Researchers will assess oral health conditions like mucositis prevalence and professional knowledge gaps. The study aims to identify educational needs and barriers to integrating dental care into palliative services, with data collection conducted at the University Medical Center Göttingen. The overall participation period involves a single assessment for each participant.
