What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating how training behavioral health (BH) technicians with an integrated operational support (IOS) toolkit of evidence-based interventions can improve psychological health and prevent clinical problems among active-duty airmen. The study focuses on enhancing BH technicians' skills to better support service members' mental well-being, stress management, and satisfaction. This trial is conducted in collaboration with the Department of the Air Force Medical Service to improve access to mental health care, reduce stigma, and address issues like sleep disorders, stress, trauma, and suicide prevention within military units. The study involves a 10-week structured training program called Cognitive Behavioral Coaching Training for embedded BH technicians. This includes an initial seminar, weekly coaching sessions with a clinical psychologist or licensed social worker, practice exercises, and homework assignments to develop competence in evidence-based interventions. The trial compares this enhanced training approach to routine care using standard resources to assess its impact on the adoption of intervention tools and service member outcomes. Participants engage in sessions with BH technicians over a period of up to 10 weeks, with assessments on service member satisfaction, depression symptoms (PHQ-9), well-being (WHO-5), perceived stress (PSS-10), and anxiety (STAI) tracked from the first session to one month after the last session, spanning up to 14 months. The study also monitors the frequency of evidence-based intervention use by BH technicians before and after training. This comprehensive evaluation aims to improve BH technician effectiveness and support service member resilience and mission readiness.
