Improving Lung Cancer Screening in Tribal Communities in Western Washington with Tailored Patient Support

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating whether tailored patient navigation PN can improve the use of lung cancer screening LCS among American Indian and Alaska Native people in tribal communities of western Washington state. Lung cancer is a leading cause of death in this population, who also have higher rates of cigarette smoking. Annual low-dose chest CT scanning is recommended for certain adults at risk, but uptake is low in these communities due to barriers. The PN services in this trial are adapted to address these unique challenges and help increase LCS participation. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group receives tailored PN support for 21 months along with educational materials about LCS. The other group receives enhanced usual care, including an educational handout and a referral to their primary care provider for the first 6 months, followed by 15 months of tailored PN support. The study uses a parallel design and single masking to compare these two approaches. During the study, participants completion of chest CT scans and follow-up steps will be tracked up to 21 months. Surveys and interviews will assess knowledge about LCS, quality of life, tobacco cessation, and engagement with navigation care. Data will be collected from medical records and participant reports. The study is sponsored by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and includes adults aged 50 to 77 who meet smoking history and healthcare access criteria.
