Improving Education for Smokers on Lung Cancer Screening Through Tobacco Quitlines

This research aims to find the best ways to provide information about lung cancer screening to heavy smokers who are eligible for screening. It focuses on increasing the number of smokers receiving high-quality educational materials about lung cancer screening through tobacco quitlines. The study is sponsored by M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and involves call center staff and smokers contacting quitlines for smoking cessation support. The study includes two main parts. Call center staff undergo a 60-minute educational training session to better inform callers. Smokers who contact the quitline and meet eligibility criteria receive educational materials about lung cancer screening. These smokers also complete questionnaires at 1 week and 6 months after receiving the educational information. This approach aims to assess the effectiveness of the educational interventions. Participants will be involved in training sessions, receiving educational content, and completing questionnaires. Researchers will measure communication content, healthcare perspectives, reach during the 6-month implementation, overall lung cancer screening rates, and effectiveness of the educational materials up to 6 months and up to 4 years in some aspects. The study monitors participants through phone, email, and monthly calls over the study period to evaluate outcomes and impact.
