What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating a multi-level, technology-assisted approach to reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors and promote mental health among Colombian youth aged 14 to 19. This study uses an open-access digital platform designed for youth and teachers, along with a hybrid mental health training program for teachers, to improve suicide prevention efforts in secondary schools in Bogota, Colombia. The study applies a hybrid type 1 implementation-effectiveness stepped wedge pilot trial design across three schools to test the approach. The digital platform for youth includes mental health self-help tools, a customizable safety plan, links to online counseling, and gamification features. Teachers access a digital platform with psychoeducation, suicide-risk screening, and decision support tools. The hybrid teacher training consists of 120 hours over three months, covering six modules on mental health topics and suicide risk identification. Schools transition to intervention sequentially in randomized order. Youth and teachers receive an introductory session and then access the platform for three months during the intervention period. Participants complete quantitative assessments measuring suicidal thoughts and behaviors, depression, anxiety, well-being, and safety planning skills at baseline, post-intervention, and three-month follow-up. Secondary assessments include feasibility, acceptability, usability, mental health literacy, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with the training. Data are collected from youth and teachers, with privacy and confidentiality protected through secure, deidentified storage. The total study duration includes baseline, intervention, and follow-up periods for each school and participant.
