What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the effects of providing access to a mental well-being phone app for Hispanic immigrants in the U.S. who are experiencing psychological distress. The study aims to understand how this app impacts participants' emotional and psychological well-being over time. This research focuses on adults who have been living in the U.S. for less than 10 years and are showing signs of distress based on a specific screening score. Participants in the study are randomly assigned to different groups. Some will have access to the well-being app for two months, others for four months. Within these groups, some participants receive no reward for using the app, some may enter a lottery for gift cards if they engage sufficiently, and others receive a direct payment as an incentive. There is also a control group that does not get access to the app during the study. During the study, participants’ mental health will be assessed using measures of depression, anxiety, stress, self-efficacy, and locus of control up to six months after enrollment. Researchers will also evaluate social connectedness and remittance behaviors. Participants will use their smartphones to engage with the app, and the study will monitor their usage and psychological well-being over time. The study runs until September 2025, and the lead sponsor is the University of Texas at Austin.
