What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the use of maltodextrin-containing clear liquids given before surgery as part of an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery ERAS protocol in children aged 3 to 8 years undergoing elective day surgery. This pilot randomized controlled study aims to assess whether this approach can improve preoperative anxiety, patient and parental compliance, oxidative stress markers, feeding tolerance after surgery, and overall postoperative recovery outcomes in pediatric surgical patients. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups one receives 125 mL of a maltodextrin-containing clear liquid, and the other receives 125 mL of a non-sugared clear liquid such as water, tea, or chamomile. Both are administered two hours before surgery. The study is conducted in a pediatric surgery unit and follows a protocol designed to compare the effects of these fluids within the ERAS framework. Throughout the study, participants will be monitored for anxiety levels before surgery using the Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale and other anxiety inventories. Researchers will also evaluate oxidative stress markers, postoperative pain, vomiting, feeding tolerance, and readiness for discharge within six hours after surgery. Data including clinical, laboratory, anesthesiology, and perioperative information will be collected to assess the interventions feasibility and impact. The total participation duration encompasses preoperative preparation and postoperative monitoring on the day of surgery.
