Study on Health Outcomes in Children Under 18 Who Have Stopped Parenteral Nutrition After Intestinal Failure

This research focuses on children with intestinal failure IF who have stopped depending on parenteral nutrition PN. These children, known as PN graduates, often face complications like metabolic bone disease, micronutrient deficiencies, and unusual body composition. The study aims to understand how common these complications are after weaning off PN and which children are most at risk. The study observes pediatric patients from two hospitals in Canada and the Netherlands who have successfully weaned off PN. Researchers will track these patients over time without intervening, collecting data on their health and any complications that arise from one year after stopping PN until they reach 18 years old. Participants will be followed regularly to monitor health outcomes related to their previous intestinal failure and PN dependency. Assessments will include tracking the occurrence of complications, gathering clinical data, and possibly performing tests related to bone health and nutrition. The study duration spans from one year after weaning off PN up to 18 years of age to better understand long-term health in these children.
