Weaning is Winning? (WeWin Study): Are Parenteral Nutrition (PN) Graduates Growing Up Healthy?

What this Trial Is About

This research focuses on children with intestinal failure (IF) who have successfully stopped using parenteral nutrition (PN), which is a method of feeding that bypasses the digestive system. Many children with IF rely on PN because their intestines cannot absorb nutrients properly, but PN can lead to complications such as bone disease, vitamin deficiencies, and unusual body composition. The study aims to understand how often these complications occur after children stop PN and to identify which children are most at risk. The study observes pediatric patients from two hospitals: the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, and Erasmus MC-Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It follows children who have been off PN for at least one year and tracks their health as they grow, without assigning any new treatments. This observational approach helps researchers gather information about the natural course of health after weaning off PN. Participants will be monitored for complications from one year after stopping PN until they reach 18 years of age. Researchers will collect data on their growth, bone health, nutrient levels, and body composition through regular assessments. The study aims to provide a clearer picture of long-term health outcomes for children who have weaned off PN, helping doctors better support these patients in the future.
