What this Trial Is About

Hospitalized older adults often face muscle weakness and loss due to extended bedrest, which can lead to dependency and the need for rehabilitation before returning home. This trial evaluates a new gamified physical therapy exercise software designed to help patients exercise safely in bed and maintain their pre-hospitalization physical function. The study is a pilot proof-of-concept aiming to assess whether this software can encourage exercise without requiring daily staff assistance. Participants are randomly assigned to either use the gamified physical therapy software along with usual care or receive usual care alone. Those in the intervention group are invited daily by a volunteer to use the software, which includes tutorial videos and guided exercises such as bicep curls, arm crosses, press ups, arm rotations, and basketball shots. The exercises are performed with motion tracking to prompt the patient. Usual care participants receive standard hospital care without the software. Throughout hospitalization, usually 1 to 2 weeks, researchers collect daily data including patient satisfaction, software usage time, and exercise completion rates for the intervention group. They also assess delirium, patient self-assessments, and functional activity measures daily. Length of hospital stay and post-discharge care needs are recorded at discharge, with follow-up on activity measures 30 days after discharge. This comprehensive monitoring aims to understand the software's impact on mobility and recovery in older inpatients.
