What this Trial Is About
This research aims to evaluate the effects of branched chain amino acids on muscle mass and functional outcomes in adults undergoing total knee arthroplasty. It is a multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial focusing on patients aged 40 to 100 years to study sarcopenia and recovery after knee replacement surgery. The study is sponsored by Seoul National University Hospital and is designed to assess muscle preservation and related physical functions post-surgery. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups one group receives Livact granules, a branched chain amino acid supplement given orally at 4.15 g three times daily for three months following surgery, alongside standard postoperative care. The other group receives only standard postoperative care without the amino acid supplement. The study period includes treatment for three months after surgery with assessments at baseline, 5 weeks, and 15 weeks post-surgery. During the study, participants will have their skeletal muscle mass index, hand grip strength, walking and sit-to-stand test times, pain levels, and activity scores measured at the specified time points. Researchers will also monitor patient-reported outcomes, medication adherence, laboratory results, and any adverse events. The primary outcome is the change in muscle mass index from baseline to 15 weeks after surgery, with additional functional and quality of life measures evaluated throughout the follow-up period.
