What this Trial Is About

This research aims to learn about the nutritional status and quality of life in children and adolescents with celiac disease compared to healthy children. Celiac disease is often diagnosed in childhood and requires a lifelong gluten-free diet, which can impact both physical health and emotional well-being. The study seeks to better understand these effects to help support children managing this condition. Participants include children diagnosed with celiac disease who follow a gluten-free diet and healthy children who eat a regular diet. Nutritional assessment involves a 24-hour dietary recall, blood tests for vitamin and mineral levels, and samples of feces and urine to detect gluten exposure. Body measurements such as weight, height, bone mineral density, and body composition will also be taken using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Quality of life will be evaluated using the PedsQL questionnaire. During the study, each participant will be assessed once between August 2024 and December 2025. Researchers will measure iron deficiency by analyzing hemoglobin and ferritin levels in both groups, comparing the prevalence between children with celiac disease and healthy children. Other assessments include interviews about diet adherence and detailed nutritional evaluations. This observational study will help inform better health and well-being strategies for children on a gluten-free diet.
