What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the effects of connective tissue massage combined with an exercise program in patients diagnosed with scleroderma, a condition affecting the skin and connective tissues. This study aims to build on previous research that showed benefits of connective tissue massage and joint manipulation on hand function, quality of life, and mobility in scleroderma patients. The trial is conducted with patients diagnosed according to established rheumatology criteria and followed at a university rheumatology department. The study will include 30 patients divided into two groups. One group of 15 patients will receive connective tissue massage on the hand and forearm area alongside a comprehensive exercise program for hand rehabilitation. This exercise program includes stretching, strengthening, joint movement, functional, and tendon sliding exercises. The other group of 15 patients will only participate in the same exercise program without massage. Participants will be assessed on hand mobility, skin thickness, and range of motion. These measurements will be taken to evaluate the effects of the interventions on hand function and skin changes. The primary outcome is mobility assessment, supported by secondary outcomes including skin thickness and range of motion assessments. The trial is randomized with single masking and is expected to run through September 2024.
