Study of Clinical and Physiological Factors Linked to Non-Invasive Respiratory Support Failure in Adults With Acute Respiratory Failure

Researchers are studying how clinical and physiological factors relate to the failure of non-invasive respiratory support NIRS in patients experiencing acute respiratory failure ARF, which includes low oxygen levels hypoxemic andor high carbon dioxide levels hypercapnic. This observational study involves both reviewing past patient records and collecting new data during patient care. The main measure is whether NIRS fails, meaning the patient needs to be intubated. Secondary measures include death rates during hospital stay and up to 90 days, length of ICU and hospital stays, and duration of respiratory support. The study does not involve experimental treatments instead, it observes standard care treatments such as high-flow nasal oxygen HFNO, non-invasive ventilation NIV, and nasal pressure monitoring. Retrospective data will be gathered from medical charts, while prospective data will be collected at specific times during clinical care. There are no additional interventions beyond usual treatment. Participants will be evaluated based on their clinical information and physiological data collected throughout their hospital stay. Researchers will track the need for invasive ventilation and other outcomes like mortality and length of stay. The primary outcome is measured within 30 days, while secondary outcomes are followed up to 90 days after enrollment. The study is expected to continue until 2030, with participants monitored during their hospital course and after discharge.
