CUHK Stroke Biobank: Collection and Analysis of Genetic and Biological Samples for Stroke and Atherosclerotic Diseases

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are collecting and storing various tissue samples to better understand the genetics and biology behind acquired diseases and injuries affecting the brain, heart, and blood vessels. This observational study aims to provide high-quality samples and related data to support future research, including genetic and biomarker studies, in order to advance prevention, treatment, and recovery options. The project also involves developing infrastructure to manage patient consent, sample processing, inventory, and sharing of materials for further investigations. Participants include stroke patients with significant intracranial or extracranial stenosis, their family members, and healthy individuals without these conditions. Blood samples will be collected once, with portions used for DNA extraction and other analyses. Cerebrospinal fluid may be collected from patients already undergoing clinical procedures involving lumbar puncture or external ventricular drains. Tissue samples may also be taken during carotid stenting procedures. Buccal swabs or saliva samples can be collected from patients, family members, or healthy subjects for genetic analysis. During the study, participants will provide samples and medical information which will be stored for future research. Researchers will analyze these samples to explore gene expression and biomarkers related to atherosclerotic genetic diseases and ischemic stroke. The main outcome measure is the study of genetics linked to ischemic stroke. The study began in 2015 and continues through 2027, with participant involvement mainly focused on sample donation and data collection.
